My research interests include: the memory of Fascism and the Second World War in Italy; the question of punishing German and Italian war criminals; the relations between Italy and Germany from the nineteenth century to the present day, the politics of memory of the European Union. My publications have been translated into English, French, Spanish and German. Two of my monographs: La guerra della memoria. La Resistenza nel dibattito politico italiano dal 1945 a oggi (Laterza, 2005); Il “cattivo tedesco" e il bravo italiano. La rimozione delle colpe della seconda guerra mondiale (Laterza, 2013) are point of reference for the national and international historiography. For my studies on the Second World War I received in 2014 the Baron Velge prize from the Université Libre de Bruxelles.
I have participated in neumerous research projects with Italian and European universities and institutes. Among these I can mention: Integration-Exklusion. Die deutsche Entschädigung für NS-Opfer in West und Ost-Europa 1953-1975 (Ludwig-Maximilians Universität, München), 2002-2003; Approche transnationale des resistances antifascists en Europe du Sud (Espagne, France, Italie, Yougoslavie, Grece) des annees 1930 a la fin des annees 1940, coordinted by Laurent Douzou (IEP, Lyon) and Mercedes Yusta (Un. Paris VIII) 2014-2017. In Italy I am currently coordinating the research project Le vittime italiane del nazionalsocialismo: le memorie dei sopravvissuti. Conoscere, ricordare, diffondere funded by the Italian and German governments, 2019-2020.
Since June 2018 I am scientific director of the Istituto nazionale Ferruccio Parri- Rete degli istituti per la storia della Resistenza e dell’età contemporanea (Milano).
I regularly collaborate with newspapers, radio and television stations in Italy and abroad on issues related to the Second World War
