Prof. Federica Toniolo's studies focus on illuminated manuscripts, particularly late Medieval and Renaissance ones, considering both the relations between illuminations and paintings and the connections between text and image in religious and secular manuscripts. Many of her studies are devoted to the production of illuminated manuscripts in the Italian courts, especially Ferrara and Urbino and their context. She also dedicated many researches to Italian choir books, their cuttings and the reconstruction of their original shape. She worked in collaboration with experts in palaeography, philology, history, liturgy and music to conduct cataloguing projects in important Italian libraries. Among her professional activities, there are a number of curatorial collaborations for important exhibitions. In addition, her research interests span to interdisciplinary projects on the cataloguing of illuminated manuscripts through the use of digital tools.
