Research career, interests and link with the outside world
The research activities focus on energy system simulation, optimization, environmental impact and malfunction analysis of energy systems and their components. The main goal of the 30-year Academic career is on the search of new methods and their engineering applications. Starting from the doctoral studies, he devoted the first part of the career to the unification of all thermoeconomic theories to develop a general methodology for the calculation of efficiencies and costs, and a new method for the detection of malfunctions in energy conversion systems. In the second part of the career, he has extended the research to the wider context of Synthesis/Design/Operation optimization of complex energy systems fed by traditional and renewable sources. In this topic, he proposed, first, in collaboration with Andrea Toffolo, a new bottom-up methodology that creates automatically complex energy systems structures starting from the combination of all possible thermodynamic processes and cycles involved. Recently, the main focus of the research is on multi-energy conversion systems (also called “smart energy systems”) composed by several conversion and storage units where the matching between variable energy demands and variable availability of renewable sources is a crucial issue, and asks for the identification of the most suitable storage technology. On this topic, in 2019 he was guest editor for a Special Issue of the journal Energies.
He has applied the proposed methods to a wide variety of systems fed by traditional and renewable sources to test their true engineering value, as demonstrated by the several papers written on real systems in collaboration with research centers and private companies. In particular, he has been responsible for research contracts with ENEL-CRT and ENEL-Green Power on: reinjection of non-condensable gases of geothermal power systems (2017-2018), integrated solar combined cycle systems (2013-2014), hydrogen fueled gas turbines (two institutional projects, 2007-2013), development of Organic Rankine Cycle systems configurations, also integrated with geothermal sources, PV systems and heat storage capacities, 2009-2011. Moreover, he lead several research contracts with private companies, among which a current one (2018-2021) with Fiorentini SpA for energy harvesting and injection of hydrogen in natural gas networks.
A proof of the unique ideas and achievements are the three Edward. F. Obert Awards of ASME for outstanding papers in thermodynamics or applied thermodynamics he has received approximately every ten years.
He is author or co-author of 239 papers, 91 of which in the main peer-reviewed energy journal.
