Research activity
The purpose of the scientific activity of P. Milani is to carry out research relevant to social needs, which combines the heuristic dimension of research with the practical-transformative one.
In this context, in 2011 she founded LabRIEF (http://labrief.fisppa.unipd.it), a Research and Intervention Laboratory in Family Education.
The most significant project managed by LabRief is P.I.P.P.I. (Intervention Program To Prevent Institutionalization), conceived by P. Milani, promoted and financed by the Ministry of Labor and Social Policies for the years 2011-2012 (first experimentation); 2013-2014 (consolidation and expansion); 2014-2018 (extension to 19 Italian Regions) aimed at implementing a national research-action-training program to reduce the risk of inappropriate removal of the child from the birth family and to guarantee to each child an intervention project based on uniform and relevant assessments.
The project was presented in several international venues, including, on 27.05.2015, at the Conseil d'Europe, Strasbourg, http: //www.coe.int/fr/web/cddecs/home.
Today P.I.P.P.I. it is the largest project in the history of Italian social policies, in terms of numbers of participants (6000 between policy-makers, managers, social workers, educators, psychologists, psychiatrists, etc.), of the extent of funding (plus 25,000,000 total Euros of public investment), of activities to be managed (the activities concern the areas of training, intervention and research), of extension over time (active since 2011 and continuously expanding).
Also responsible for several national research projects not on, but with local services, she collaborates regularly with C. Chamberland (Center of Excellence for the protection and the bien-être des enfants, Université de Montréal) and C. Lacharité, Center de recherche sur le Développement de l'enfance et de la famille, Université de Trois Rivières, Québec.
