Research activity
My main research interests bear on the three following areas:
(a) Social theory: general theory in sociology, particularly the structure-and-agency con-nection; socialization theory; the integration of a morphogenetic with a relational approach to social theory; emergent properties in social theory; social and cultural change in Euro-pean societies.
(b) Sociology of education: the self and the transformation of educational cultures; com-parative education policy in European societies, particularly school autonomy, pub-lic/private partnerships and institutional arrangements; education, social capital and civic cultures.
(c) Cultural change: the transformation of actors, cultures, and practices in complex socie-ties, with special focus on their interrelation with social policy, the religious and the eco-nomic sphere.
- Among the empirical research projects that have been funded in recent years, the follow-ing may be mentioned as relevant to the current proposal:
Member of the International Steering Group for the Longitudinal Study of Social and Emotional Skills in Cities (LSEC), within OECD’s research project ESP (Education for Social Progress). For the same research, he is member of the Italian GCN (gruppo di coordinamento nazionale) and of the related Scientific Committee.
