• MAJOR BREAKTHROUGHS and RESEARCH IMPACT
A major achievement of the research activity concerns the development of a novel classification of flow regimes and the analysis of the related implications for flood frequency, sediment transport, erosional rates and sensitivity to climate/environmental change. Two types of regimes with distinct temporal dynamics, a different sensitivity to hydroclimatic patterns and diverse potential to flooding and erosion were identified based on quantifiable rainfall and landscape attributes.

A second breakthrough relates to the study of flow and transport processes at catchment scale. I have developed a novel theory for the spatially integrated description of transport processes in complex heterogeneous domains, which provides a theoretical basis for the parsimonious and consistent modelling of water fluxes and solute concentration in rivers. Such a theory gave rise to a new class of models based on the concept of “dynamical travel time distributions”, which is becoming increasingly widespread in the literature.

• INVITED PRESENTATION AT NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCES
The visibility of my research activity within the scientific community is witnessed by a number of invited talks at national and international conferences, including the following:
